Darius was trying so hard not to be nervous here. His fingers twitched on the counter as he fought the desire to tap them restlessly, too full of restless energy and anxiety. It was only through extreme concentration that he was able to remain so still, staring at the door as if he could make it open with his mind. The cybernetic eye seemed to be looking through the material, as if scanning the street beyond for the person he knew was coming.

Really, the margin for error here was distressingly large. He'd been asked to make an item for Mr. Golov, an eccentric and very dangerous man, and he just couldn't resist being cheeky about it. The man was either going to love what Darius had done, or deem it a disgrace and shoot him in the face. Either way, being nervous was only going to make the situation worse, so he did his best to calm himself.

Schrodinger must have been able to sense his distress, because the cat leapt to the counter, purring loudly, and began to brush lovingly against his arms. Automatically, even absently, Darius raised a hand and began to pet the little furball, even as Schrodinger started to bat curiously at the small, nondescript box on the counter.

"Stop that," he said angrily to the cat, snatching the item out of his reach and receiving an indignant glare in reply. He sighed, but quickly straightened as the door chime told him that his guest had arrived.

“It’s not far from here, Mr. Golov,” Reina assured the man who was dressed in a coat with ornate buttons and shoes more lavish than Reina’s entire outfit. Today Reina had chosen to wear something drab compared to her usual attire; she ended up wearing a solid, orange blouse with matching hooped earrings and black dress pants.

The deal was important to her. Her heart thumped in her chest as they reached the entrance of Darius’ shop. An electronic pipe constructed with heat insulating composite sat hidden inside the bag hooked over her arm. If things went well— not that she doubted Darius’ ability to create something worth the purchase— the pipe would never see the light of day. However, Darius was not predictable, and a part of Reina feared that he would pull out something only he would understand to be useful. That would be Reina’s cue to laugh, telling Mr. Golov that Darius had been pulling his leg and then to pull out the pipe.

She opened the door and Mr. Golov shuffled in, unsmiling and already looking at his watch.

“Darius my dear, good to see you again! I have decided to come after all,” Reina waltzed in after the stiff man. “Darius Grimm, meet Maksim Golov. Maksim Golov, Darius Grimm.”

“It is quite a thing to have an extra life, but nine? Such an unfair creature,” Mr. Golov’s raspy and low voice murmured. He intently focused on the cat without appearing to notice Darius.

Reina leaned her elbow on the counter and sent a head-tilt, lip pout as if to tell Darius to get rid of his cat. She doubted that Darius would comply since they seemed to be glued at the hip. One thing she had forgotten to disclaim was that Mr. Golov had a great prejudice against cats. For some reason the man came up with a slew of insults that Reina would had found quite entertaining, if she didn’t have a business reputation to uphold.

The pair were quite a sight, even amongst the colorful crowd that could often be seen on Level F at this time of day. It wasn't unusual for people here to wear fluorescent colors that could easily be picked up by blacklight. Even he had a few brightly colored pieces in his wardrobe, though only because he was not keep on being run over in the darkness because he hadn't been seen in his preferred black and dark grey clothes.

He didn't let Reina's appearance or the lavishness of Mr. Golov's outfit shake him, though. If anything, her presence calmed him, if not significantly. It was easier to put on a show of being calm and nonchalant when he had an audience than for an empty, depressing shop.

"Oh be still my heart," Darius said, not bothering to hide the sarcasm at Reina's enthusiasm. He was much more respectful to Mr. Golov, however, even if he hated it. He had never liked rolling over and exposing his belly for anyone, no matter how rich or influential. "Sir," he said in the best semblance of humility he could manage, helped by a slight edge of nerves that crept into his voice against his will. His eye whirred audibly as he manually adjusted the focus, concentrating on Golov's hand as they shook, checking for concealed weapons. He was satisfied that there were none.

He practically had to bit his tongue not to tell Golov that cats having 9 lives was an old wives tale and that he was dumb for mentioning it, but he didn't kick the cat out of the shop. He felt better with the little furball around, and he wasn't about to let go of that small comfort.

"I assume you're here to see what I made for you then?" he asked, getting straight to the point. The small box sat in the middle of the counter, conspicuous in its simplicity. Anything could be in there, and it was small enough to invoke a sense of wonder.

The two of them edged closer when Darius presented the box. Reina let out a gasp, posing her hand over her mouth and batting large eyes at the buyer. Her chest was buzzing with anticipation. She wondered if the box was the invention itself or if Darius had decided to go fancy and make a grand reveal. “Prepare to be impressed, sir. Darius here is one of the best inventors on this level.”

“This level,” Mr. Golov repeated in an unimpressed grumble before fixing his eyes on Darius, “Are you going to stuff your contortionist cat in the box and prove that it’s both dead and alive?”

The stern man walked to the side. He paused and then lifted his walking cane, giving the box a nudge. Jericho’s advanced medicine had fixed Mr. Golov’s atrophy years ago, but he still insisted relying on the jeweled cane. It's reasons for keeping it were evident now; he liked using it to push things around-- including cats.

One eyebrow twitched upward slightly at Mr. Golov's joke, "Well I didn't name him Schrodinger for nothing," he said humorlessly. Most didn't get the reference to the famous philosopher, so the fact that this opulent man did earned him one small mark in his favor. A mark that was quickly taken away for his obvious disdain for the cat. If Darius had been considering kicking Schro out of the room before, that was off the table now. He didn't care if it lost him the deal, no one dissed his cat.

He let them admire the box for a moment. It appeared completely seamless, a trick he'd learned years ago. In reality, there were microfissures where the material would split and reveal a hatch and a button. These tiny hairline seams were visible to his own mechanical eye, but were completely imperceptible to the natural eye.

Once he was pleased that they had taken the thing in and their anticipation was high, he reached out and tapped the top of the box. It responded instantly, and a tiny square section of material raised itself up, lit from beneath by a red light. Really, it was all a bunch of parlor tricks to make this gadget look more high-tech than it was in actuality. The box had only contained a very few cybernetic components, the majority of it had been clockwork, and that was what lay beneath the surface.

"I assume you'll want to do the honors, Mr. Golov." Darius said, one corner of his mouth twitching slightly upwards in his attempt not to smirk. Sure enough, the opulent man reach out and tapped the switch, only to realize it didn't depress, but instead, slid backwards. It was a switch, not a button. He clicked it and the device activated.

It took only a second, it was over almost too quickly for the onlookers to fully understand what had happened. A tiny hatch below the switch opened up, and an intricate hand made out of clockwork appeared, felt around until it found the switch, and clicked it back into place, causing the device to deactivate and the hand to retreat. The motions were smooth, not as smooth or realistic as they would be with pneumatics or hydraulics driving it, but impressive for what he had to work with.

"Go on, click it again," Darius said calmly. He hadn't been able to resist showing off a little bit. The box would be able to perform 3 separate motions before it began to repeat. On the second click, it would not feel around for the switch, but would know exactly where it was, click it back into place, and disappear. The third attempt would cause the hand to flip everyone in the room the bird before flipping the switch and retreating to its place in the box.

"Go on, click it again. It will go twice more," he encouraged them.

Reina ooohed and ahhhed at all the expected moments as they watched the box reveal a delicate hand that seemed to have a mind of its own. Mr. Golov, on the other hand, exemplified interest at seemingly unexpected moments. The corners of his lips turned up when the button turned out to be a switch, he tilted his head after the box was still once more, and he marveled at the box's seamless edges.

“Oh! This is such a delight!”
Reina exclaimed, sounding more giddy than usual. She had to convince Mr. Golov of the impressive feat of an invention such as this one— and it was!

“Only two more times?” the prickly man commented with a hint of dissatisfaction. “You missed the opportunity for rock, paper, scissors…a randomizing mechanism would be quality,” he murmured to himself.

He flipped the switch again as instructed. Reina clapped her hands when the hand found the switch without trouble and laughed when it gave them the finger, “What attitude!”

Mr. Golov, on the other hand (no pun intended), had other ideas. Mr. Golov, faster than whip, reached out and grabbed the hand just after it flipped the switch. It happened so fast that Reina barely had time to comprehend the move. She watched, as the man's wrinkly fist wrapped around the hand. Would the hand break as it tried to recede back into the box, or would it patiently wait until its was released? Darius’ invention could fail here and now.

The fact of the matter was that, even someone as skilled as Darius was limited. Clockwork could only accomplish so much, and true artificial intelligence was impossible using it. Anyone who understood the mechanics of it would know this, but with the commonness of cybernetic components in toys and computers these days, few people truly understood the limitations of clockwork.

That said, Darius was a master of his craft, and knew exactly how to keep his inventions safe. Where some engineers would have built the retreating mechanism into a spring, causing the hand to continue pulling out of Mr. Golov's hand and break itself, Darius had cleverly invented a mechanism that didn't rely on the tensile strength of a spring. Because of this, the hand merely sat in the man's fat hand, waiting to be released.

It was Darius who reacted, not the machine. He reached his hand out and swatted Mr. Golov's hand with a deep, angry frown. When it was finally released, the clockwork hand repeated its original motion, flipping off the eccentric buyer, moving to flip its switch again (despite the switch in question already being turned to the "off" position) and retreated into the box.

Darius' voice, though soft, contained thunder. "Excuse you, sir but this is a clockwork mechanism and that means it's delicate. I can handle you coming in here and talking down to me and insulting my cat, but if you're going to mistreat the things I make then you can leave, because I don't want your business." Mr. Golov had touched a nerve, and it had put the steel back into Darius' spine.

Mr. Golov leaned his cane against the counter and placed his hands behind his back. He remained calm, taking in what Darius had to say about his brash action. A moment later he was then pulling out a slip of paper from his breast pocket and writing something down on it.

“I’m sure Mr. Golov here didn’t mean any harm…” Reina was quick to defend the buyer. She couldn’t let Darius’ protect his invention and pride; once the gadget left the shop, he would have no say in what the buyer did with his free time.

As she trailed off, Mr. Golov started speaking, “Mistreating is when the contraption when does not do what it is supposed to do. If not to delight and to be in the same room as finicky children, then what is it-- to show off your abilities? Either way I still want your business.”

He slapped down the piece of paper on the counter. It had a number on it. It was a very large number. Reina’s eyes lit up and she urgently glanced at it and back at Darius. The number was impressive for the device, but so were the opportunities that awaited Darius now that the inventor was impressed with his talent.

”Please,” She mouthed to Darius, knowing that they would inevitably run into personality problems in the long run. She just needed this one deal.

Darius' pride told him to say no, but the pleading look and the huge number on that slip of paper begged him to say yes. In the end, he still regarded his inventions as sort of like his children, but he knew better than to turn down an offer like this. His little shop desperately needed the income, he had been eating scraps for weeks. In the choice of whether to feed himself or Schrodinger, the cat always won. With this kind of money, he wouldn't have to make that decision any more.

"Fine," he said, taking the slip of paper before Mr. Golov could renig on the deal. "But you wouldn't hand a delicate piece of clockwork to a finicky child any more than you would a crystal vase."

Reina was already scooping the box under her arm and ushering Mr. Golov towards the door as she shot Darius a relieved grin. “You have made a wise choice, sir. Darius Grimm is a rare gem, an inventor deserving of reputation."

Of course Mr. Golov had one more utterance that sent a suppressed shock to Reina’s chest. “Good thing I don’t have one of those smug nuisances who knock things over, crystal vases among other things,” he waved a lazy hand toward the direction of the cat.

Reina could only hope that Darius was too entranced by the payment that would be transferred to his electronic account – or under the table, but either way Reina would take care of the arrangements the next day – that he would not take the man’s statement to heart. Hopefully he didn’t hear.

She continued rushing to the door in a flurry, the sleeves of her blouse rustling from her brisk movement. If Darius was to change his mind last minute, she would run out, shoving the buyer out the door if she had to.
