“Monet, escort duties. The princess misses you,” Tess read her assignment out loud in the barracks. Scowling, she punched the exit button on her screen and veered around.

“Who is in charge of the assignments this week?”
she exclaimed in annoyance. The other soldiers in her rank laughed and shrugged. They knew she got the worst of assignments, but they were glad it wasn’t them. Tess thought she was a good soldier; she didn’t deserve this.

“Let me see that,” she grimaced and grabbed the tablet from Marks. “Operation Redhawk!” she shoved it back into his arms and stormed out of the barracks.

Her fists were tightened at her sides as she strode through the building. Her mission today wasn’t going to be playing mommy for a Level A Elite; today she was going to be giving Octavia a piece of her mind.

With luck, she spotted the blond soldier just as she was heading out of a briefing. Tess didn’t remember the last time she had been briefed. Whatever they had been talking about in the room looked important.

Saluting someone as they walked past Octavia, Tess bypassed the formalities with Octavia and slid in front of the woman. Breathing harder than usual, Tess’s brows were in a straight line as she confronted the higher-level soldier, “I thought you said you would put in a good word for me, Lewis. Babysitting isn’t on my repertoire.”

Octavia stared at the small piece of paper that had been given to her in the debrief she had just experienced. A tense room full of mutants that really had no idea what awaited them on their next mission, just that they were to annihilate any other living contacts that made it into their perimeter.

As she read over the paper, memorizing every line so she could dispose of it in the small shredder in her room, she heard the familiar foot pattern and weight of one Tess Monet coming towards her. Her feet did not sound pleased, and as she looked up to see the other woman's face, she could now tell completely that she was displeased with her current day.

As Tess started speaking to her, Octavia tucked the paper slowly into her pocket and raised her eyebrows, blinking slowly. With an awkward smile, she tucked her hands together and began to look bemused as she really listened to what Tess had to say.

"Was your placement not adequate? It's the best paying in the ranks. Although I didn't get to choose the placement, I did put in a good word for you." Octavia bit her lip and glanced around, before looking back tot eh older woman. She was a bit intimidated by these kinds of situations; social situations. Her hand came up to her hair and she ran out through slowly, before slumping her hip to one side as she thought.

What would you prefer? I can see if I can get you transferred. I didn't mean to make you upset." Octavia went back to smiling pleasantly, although her insides churned at the thought of someone being cross with her over something that she had no control over.

Tess didn’t understand how a sweet girl like Octavia somehow managed to climb the ranks to the heightened position she was in now. Tess hadn’t seen the other soldier’s growth. It was like she just popped out of the womb and into the grand ranks of Jericho’s military. Soldiers were supposed to at least be strategical, brave, or resilient. Tess didn’t know which of those Octavia was, she sure as hell wasn’t brave based on the way she bit her lip and shied away from Tess.

“Liar,” Tess hissed and her eyes glimmered after Octavia claimed that she had put in a good word for her. No one told the truth and went looking around guilty-like how Lewis was doing now. Tess hadn’t expected Lewis to put in a good word for her anyway. If she had, whatever dull complement Octavia could dredge up for her probably went unnoticed anyway.

“Listen kid,” Tess leaned forward so that she was inches from the woman’s face. Her voice grew into a low growl. She would have grabbed Octavia’s collar if they were off-site. “The only place I want to get transferred to is your mission unit. What were you all talking about in there? Give me a hint at least.”

Until now, Tess had been civil to Octavia. Once in a while she would rear her no-nonsense exasperation, but she was known for it, and it hadn’t been personal. It was now. She wanted to give miss pretty nightmares.

Octavia raised her brows at the other woman, tilting her head. Was this anger? Octavia furrowed her brows to copy Tess and wrinkled her nose slightly to see what it would feel like. After she immediately decided she didn't like the feeling of her face in that position, she sighed softly and relaxed, before glancing back to Tess, this time her face in a state of complete lack of emotion. Inside her, something bubbled in the back of her mind; she didn't like the feeling, although judging by the way her palms clenched involuntary, and the way she felt like pulling out her hair, she based the feeling close to anger, or perhaps annoyance.

"I do not lie." She said sternly, feeling her eyebrows sink into the position she had tried to relax from seconds before. "I gave your recommendation to my commanding officer to pass on to their own." Octavia drew in a deep breath, trying to calm down. What had the interpersonal relationship lessons taught her before she left the labs? She could barely remember now, once her anger started to flow. It was hard to control emotions you had barely experienced in your life. The closest that she had come to anger before her integration was disappointment at yet another birthday of hers going by with not a single recognition.

Why did humans outside of the labs have to be so difficult?

When Tess started asking about her mission, she folded her arms across her chest and narrowed her eyes even further. This was something that she was taught very well how to handle.
"That classified. Special Operations only."

Sure you did,” Tess responded. Although she sounded skeptical, she decided to herself that Octavia likely did give the recommendation. To what affect it had, only time will tell. Messages took time to go up the chain of command, and somehow the harder requests got bottle-necked or got just plain discarded if there was some ill-will along the line.

She observed that Octavia was now breathing heavily. A small smile crept on her lips. She was enjoying this.

Unfortunately, Tess didn’t break her because Octavia wouldn’t budge on even a hint at what they had been discussing in the briefing. “You know what else is classified?” Tess snapped in annoyance, “The specials on the lunch menu. Shower tokens. Toilet duty. Have fun being shunned.”

She turned and stormed off. Maybe Octavia might have opened up if Tess had gone the friend route. Instead Tess had chosen to resort back to childish play. Octavia seemed too high-strung. With no one to turn to except cold shoulders, she’d shatter in no time. That was what Tess assumed, at least.

Tess continued walking until she was around the corner. Then she looped around the counter and hid behind some bags of grain. Maybe this classified operation of Octavia's would start soon.

Octavia stared after Tess as she walked away, listening to her footsteps. Thinking of the prospect of having literally less friends than she had now, was not something that sat well with her. The confrontation had left her with this weird shaking and angry feeling in the pit of her stomach, like someone had just punched her, and the force was too much for her to handle. Octavia didn't take things that she couldn't handle well, opting to bouts of obsessive behaviours like tugging her hair out, cleaning her body until every inch of her skin was raw and red looking. It wasn't pretty when the girl got stressed out, but she knew how to cope for the most part, now.

Besides, she had to focus on her next mission. There had been a small settlement outside of the city that had been attacked recently by the more savage of the outsiders. She knew the settlement was peaceful, but her job was to inspect and make sure they wouldn't bring any potential threats to the city. Mainly, the more savage people that had attacked them earlier that week. If they were a target for the more vicious outsiders, they were a liability and would have to be taken care of. The Jerichan military considered this a "mercy" killing, but Octavia knew better than that; she knew it was just to protect their own asses. But she did what she was told.

She slowly made her way to the armoury vaults, making sure she recited the list of what she would need in her head. While she collected the weapons and armour she would need, she strapped up her knees and ankles. Moving fast required that she be in top shape, and reinforced knee and ankle joints were always a must for her more... special abilities.

Once she was outfitted in all her supplies, she made her way to the hovercraft loading bay, where someone would be waiting there to take her to her destination. She was hoping the mission would go smoother than she was expecting it to; but she knew that some people would probably die today. It was all a matter of who.

Tess wavered, crouching behind the bags of grain and wondering if there would be any advantage to trailing the other soldier. Tess took her job seriously. Despite her cold stares and uncompromising comments, she did her job well. That meant she followed the rules…to a certain extent. She believed that sometimes someone had to follow the rules no matter how stupid they were, but she also knew blindly following orders was foolish. Today she was on her own path. She told herself that there was a chance that Octavia might be a traitor.

Tess had heard earlier that Merlin, known as an easy-going pilot, jokingly complain something about heading to sector G. Sure enough, Merlin was waiting in front of the craft. Normally Tess wouldn’t hitchhike on a hovercraft, but the opportunity was too good to give up.

“Your last-minute mission notes are in that clipboard over there,” Merlin addressed Octavia before heading to the back of the craft to run a last-minute check on the landing gear.

Tess grabbed a helmet off a cart and walked over, “Hey Karady. Surprise co-pilot inspection check.”

Merlin looked at her in question, “This is not—“

“Yeah yeah, I know. It’s the one where you’re…” she leaned and whispered, “flying Lewis to Sector O. I’ve been assigned to check procedure and gears.”

Merlin stared at her for a moment before jerking his head toward the craft, “Suit up.”

Tess slipped on her dark helmet with a smirk and quickly boarded the craft.

Octavia thanked the man named Merlin and flashed him a pleasant smile, before boarding the craft. Once she was seated, she looked over the notes and frowned to herself, narrowing her eyes.
"So... It is a rebel settlement..." She sighed softly and ran her fingers through her hair. "I really didn't..." Octavia stopped herself from speaking as she saw another member board the hovercraft. She raised an eyebrow and looked down at her files, before pulling out a small glass pane with two silver handles on the side. As she looked over the glass pane, she frowned.

No one had assigned her another team mate.

"I guess you must be a last-minute addition." Octavia mumbled under her breath. She could tell her voice sounded irritated, but she hadn't been briefed. If something happened to the other member, she would not consider herself responsible.

"Please try not to get killed." Octavia tilted her head at the helmeted person sitting across from her. She heard the all-too-familiar rumble of the engines starting in the hovercraft, and buckled her seat belt. "This is going to be really dangerous, I hope they didn't assign you as backup." Octavia pulled her helmet over her head after tucking her hair up, and wrinkled her nose.

"They could have sent Purtalis..." She turned on the screen in her helmet, watching as the blue light illuminated her face behind the glass. "He's at least experienced with these people..." She was being quiet enough that her voice would just sound like muffled mumbles.

“I’m not in the mood to talk to blondie here. Keep me anonymous, will you?” Tess spoke into the intercom system that Octavia would not hear since she had not put on her helmet yet.

“Sure thing,” the pilot replied, “Your identity is safe with me.”

Tess tried to refrain from edging away from Octavia when she took her seat. However her nerves betrayed her and her shoulders shrunk into her body as she absentmindedly wondered if Octavia would recognize her through her scent or her physique. Thus, she straightened her back, and her posture remained stiff as if not to show any personality. Tess wasn’t the type to wear perfume but someone had told her once that she smelled a bit of lemons and sawdust.

She took note of Octavia’s mention of the rebel settlement. There were rumors of some Jerichans who had gotten close to the enemy became privy to their beliefs. That was why the city's soldiers had to attend regular psychiatric sessions and be invested in the Jerichan culture from birth.

Tess slowly turned her helmeted head to look straight at Octavia. She knew that her face was shielded by the opaque shielding. It was the only way she could acknowledge that she could hear her without giving herself away; the other soldier might recognize her voice.

As the hovercraft hummed to life, Tess pulled her seat belt across her chest and buckled herself in. A jarring sensation caught her chest as Octavia continued. What was this about the mission being dangerous? She had planned on watching Octavia from the craft while doing her “inspection check”.

“You ready, fighter?” Merlin’s voice came over the helmet comm, “Please disregard the humble inspector sitting beside you. Let me know if she causes you trouble.”

Tess smirked and rolled her eyes from under her helmet.

Merlin continued, “I don’t know much about your mission except I’m doing a drop off and absolutely not to pick you up unless I hear confirmation from you. I sure hope it’s not a suicide mission,” Merlin laughed, “Cause I’ll miss you deeply.”

Octavia felt her lips quiver into a smile as she thought on Merlin's words. He was a good pilot, and she appreciated his services. She glanced to the other person int he hovercraft and gave them a quick thumbs-up before focusing on her screens inside the helmet. One registered her vitals; her heartbeat going steadily as she breathed in and out in the slowest breath she could measure. Once she jumped, she knew they would spike a bit, so she was trying to keep them as low as possible for now.

"I'd miss you too, Merlin." Octavia mumbled into her helmet's microphone, before tucking a stray piece of hair back inside. The last time he had flown her out, she had come back with half her arm's innards on the outside of the skin. Hopefully things would go better this time around.

"Alright, inspector. Since you're going to be back here, it might be easier for you to read my vitals while I'm out there, so the pilot doesn't have to run back and forth... In case things go wrong." Octavia glanced out the window of the hovercraft and frowned at the sand. They passed a few different settlements - all seemingly abandoned, or very little life left in them. When they finally stopped, they were over water. Octavia stood and zipped up the front of her combat suit before slipping a flak vest over her head and strapping it on. The rest of her suit was made from breathable, but reinforced Kevlar padding that covered her most vulnerable spots.

Once she was outfitted in her gear, she grabbed a long-range sniper with a scope from the back of the hovercraft and tucked the collar of her suit up into her helmet to form an air-tight seal.
"See you soon, hopefully." She pointed to the vitals and live-cam feed on the screens of the hovercraft's back section. "Make sure nothing too bad happens to me." She laughed and opened the hatch to the side of the craft, glancing down. It was about a 20 foot drop to the water. Octavia turned around and folded her arms across her chest, flopping backwards into the air. As she fell, she could feel her heartbeat raise slightly, and she adjusted her breathing to slow it back to normal.

"Entry complete." She spoke into her microphone as she entered the water, nearly seamlessly, and almost inaudible. "Proceeding to the camp."

Tess became aware of how far they were traveling, and soon they were beyond the city, gliding over the famous Jericho River. The settlements below lacked life, which was expected. Tess had been taught since birth that life was difficult outside the city and that no other civilization as great as Jericho lived beyond its walls. As she started her level E training, like every soldier trained for the outside, she learned more about the outsiders. There had been more than she had expected. A part of her had been tentative, imagining a swarm of bodies, but there were none that she could see so far.

After Octavia addressed her, Tess turned and gave the other soldier a quick nod. Octavia’s vitals were the least of her worries right now; Tess didn’t want to be relied on to watch over a life for a mission she hadn’t been briefed on. She wasn’t supposed to be here.

She waited as Octavia suited up and took the time to study the screens. The latest technology gave them the advantage of knowing when to call for backup and of being able to measure the odds.

She turned to watch as Octavia left the craft, widening her eyes from the window when the other woman landed in the water. Tess hadn’t even trained for jumping; it wasn’t her specialty. Until now she thought that Octavia was in the same subdivision, but now Tess knew she had been hiding her authority.

“Beautiful landing, as usual,”
Merlin audibly sighed in relief when he heard Octavia had arrived safely, “Keep us updated. Over.”

Tess looked down as the hovercraft swooped around to head away from the side of the river. She turned on private communications. “Wait a second,” Tess leaned over Merlin’s seat, “Turn on the heat sensors and point the craft toward that bank over there…”

Merlin switched on a line with Octavia, “Lewis? Hold tight. Possible enemy. Can you find a place to hide north-east a few meters into shore? Over.”

Octavia saw the people before she heard the crackle of the radio turning back on to tell her who they were. Before she could even answer, a shot buzzed past her ear and she sighed, flicking her mic back on.

"Thanks for the compliment, Merlin. As for the intelligence... They're already on me. Just head to the rendevouz, I'll catch up once I'm finished here" She made her way through the water, feeling as it moved gently around her body. Even in the wetsuit, she felt the warmth from the sun earlier that day in the current. She watched carefully as the men who waited for her on shore waded up to their knees in the water. Octavia stood up slowly and pulled a knife from her utility belt, tossing it through the air. When it hit its target - the eye of one of the men - she watched him drop into the water, screeching and clawing at his face. While the other men were distracted trying to help him up, she slipped back under the water and swam up to them, staying nearly invisible in the dark liquid.

"They're distracted. Everything is fine. Keep a lookout on my radar for me." She stood up once she was far enough away and started running. Octavia had always been fast, even when she hadn't discovered her powers yet, but now as she moved her own body's energy into her legs, she felt herself picking up speed. Once she reached the perimeter of the camp, she skidded to a halt and slid behind a a sand dune, staring at the little makeshift shacks of scrap metal and fabric.

"Definitely a settlement. Judging by their security, I'd say their hostile. I'm not entirely sure yet." Octavia slipped around the dune and crouched her way to a small shack, looking around for a campfire. There were a few men and a couple of women sitting around it, all holding guns.

"Hostiles. Permission to open fire request is in the dash binder. Just sign it and we can get this started." Her voice became a little monotone, as if she were turning off the emotion in her brain and hardwired for this job. It was a strange mix of robotic and apathetic. She didn't see any children wandering around, either. This was a purely adult settlement.

Tess quietly spit out semi-coherent curses as she watched the heat sensor catch Octavia in action. Octavia was swift and skilled like an impossible video game character. Merlin gave Tess a hard look before the craft angled, and they started heading away from the drop-off point.

“You’re not assigned to this mission, are you,” he turned off the global mic.

Tess leaned back into her seat and took off her helmet as he switched the controls so that they could hear Octavia but she couldn’t hear them. She wondered if Octavia simply looked like she was moving fast because Tess was being slow at comprehending the mission.

“No,” she finally responded after awhile, “If I had been, I would have something to say about it.”

Merlin’s hard look turned sharp, and his voice took on a tone of frustration, “Damnit, Monet. You better not be planning on compromising this mission. Octavia’s life is at risk, and I sure as hell am not going to let you risk it further.”

Tess scowled and crossed her arms. She had planned on sitting quietly for the duration of the trip. Then she heard Octavia’s next words.

“Karady…” Tess growled and slowly stood up to confront the pilot. She couldn't think of why in the world would Octavia be firing at a far-out settlement and what gave the pilot permission to sign off that order. “KARADY!”

“Shut up,” he bristled, tossing his credentials at her. Tess caught it and stared at the flap of electronic plastic that told her that Merlin was more than just a pilot. Her eyes were wide as she slowly handed his credentials back to him.

“It’s signed and a go, Lewis,” Merlin took it without looking at Tess; he was focused on Octavia, “Go ahead and do what you have to do.”

Tess sank back down in her seat and sunk her heads in her hands. It was going to be a long ride home, that is, if Octavia even made it back in one piece.

Octavia tucked the guns firmly into her hands and swept herself under the threshold of one of the small scrap-metal huts.
"Do we have a problem out there, Merlin? Your response wasn't as fast as it normally was." Octavia's breathing and voice remained in the robotic nature, as she took a deep breath and slipped a silencer onto the gun she was holding.

"I'm proceeding with the silencer until noticed. If things get too hot, I might need you to pull me out. There's... A lot of them." Octavia stared at the group of men and women, before shaking her head. "I better be getting some good recommendations off of this." She whispered more to herself than to her headset. It wasn't that she minded her job, it just seemed a little... needless. These rebels were way too far to be a threat any time soon to Jericho...

The city was just full of chickens who couldn't deal with the thought our outsiders. Octavia tried to recall the word that she had been taught when learning about the old wars that destroyed most of civilization in the first place. Xenophobic; yes. That was it.

Jericho was full of xenophobes who would rather see hundreds of innocent lives die just to protect their credentials as the "Utopian city".

Octavia raised her gun and fired off a few shots, watching the people around the fire slowly slip and slump to the ground. She made the shots quick and clean, making sure the death was as painless as possible. Once the bodies had started being noticed, she started running. Her legs sped up and propelled her upwards, knees grasping at a man's head that was just about to shoot her. She whipped out a knife from the side of her utility belt and slammed it into his temple, watching the light fade from his eyes. Behind her, another few men and women raised their guns, screaming at her to stop.

Whipping around, she let out four shots into the heads of the people behind her, leaving one up for debate. He looked younger than the rest; probably about 19 or 20.
"I'm sorry." Octavia said carefully. "You're a threat." She flipped the knife in her hand and tossed it, watching it land between the man's eyes. As he fell to his knees, Octavia felt something sting in her stomach. At first, she thought it was guilt, but upon closer inspection of her clothing and sensing inside her body, she slipped to her knees. The young man had got a good dying-shot in. It might have been a fluke, but it still hurt like a bastard.

"Merlin, I've been shot." Octavia said quietly. "I'm going to need a pickup. Targets have been neutralized." She reached down and held her stomach, pressing on the wound.

"You should prep an evidence bag, I want to see where these people are getting their weapons." Octavia sighed and sat back against a log. "There shouldn't be anyone else; no one is showing up on heat sensors."

“Prep an evidence bag? What about a medic pack?” Tess scornfully remarked, still feeling a sense of disbelief about the entire situation. She had noticed how Merlin had slightly shaken his head in a silent negative when Octavia requested that she be pulled out if things got too hot. Apparently Tess wasn’t the only one who didn’t know about some aspects of the mission.

From what Tess had heard, it sounded like Octavia had killed an entire area, and perhaps an entire settlement. It had also sounded like she had just been shot.

“You need to sit down and remain quiet, Monet. I will protect you, but I highly doubt that Octavia will give you the same treatment if she finds out,” Merlin turned around and told Tess with a serious look, and his brows were furrowed.

“Where are you injured, Lewis? Also I need the evacuation code word,” Merlin said after he switched the comms back on, “You know I can’t pull you out until you’ve officially confirmed that it’s clear.”

He flipped the switch and turned back to Tess, “Prep the evidence bag. The first aid kit is in the upper-left cabinet. Depending on her injury we may need to stabilize her, but we should get back to the city in good time.”

“I doubt she’s bleeding out,” Tess muttered, “Sounds like she’s adventuring around collecting weapons for evidence.” There was a lot that Tess didn’t know about Octavia, about Merlin, or about Jericho’s military functions for that matter. She wasn’t going to let it off her radar that easily.
