The dry lands beyond the Jericho walls were lifeless and barren. Tess tightened her lips and shielded her eyes from the glaring sun, her ponytail gently swaying in the wind. She had been assigned to check this portion of the furthest-out wall. It was a solo mission—and for good reason since there was nothing in the surrounding area.

The surveillance cameras didn’t cover much this far from the city—and it didn’t need to; every outsider knew the first wall as only a strainer to weed out the majority. The city occasionally sent their soldiers to inspect the wall and to make sure the Outsiders weren't building a village next door.

As expected, there was nothing. Even the area had a muffled sound, or maybe the sound was silence, a silence that Tess had forgotten. Even so, she had to be careful because the lands beyond Jericho wasn’t protected and could hold unforeseeable dangers.

She rested her palm against the looming concrete wall before heading out with her sanctioned Jerichan military pistol and her comms unit around her wrist. She passed a ticket of skeletal trees, brown and dead but pretending to be a forest that they once were long ago. Her motions were rash as she ducked through the trees. As much as she enjoyed the silence, she had better things to do than guard nothing. She planned on looping around the section before heading back.

Suddenly her foot slipped. Surprised, she threw out her arms, but it was too late. She fell down the incline. Her gun flew off and landed in the rocks as she tumbled. Her comms unit smashed against the floor along with her wrist. She landed hard, and a sharp pain pierced her left foot.

Groaning, she looked down, and her heart quickened. Her foot had been punctured by the vicious claws of a metal bear-trap.

The Wastes weren't for everyone. For the Outsiders of the world, this place was home and they were tailor made for it. They were made of bone dust and iron strength - things that were made to hold up against potential terror of the world. But the "genetically superior" people of Jericho, they were no damn good out here. They couldn't stomach the heat and the deprivation. They couldn't stomach the reality of the life that waited for those that were outside the walls. And there was something cleansing about that fact.

The young woman moved through the Wastes, casually observing the hard dirt of the landscape. She couldn't halt the part of her that longed for a find, that wanted to discover something deep within the hidden depths of the Waste. It was better to wander, to watch, to scout, than to stand too still for too long. And you never knew what you would find. Something useful, something long forgotten...

...or something from a sad somewhere far away.

Esh sighed as she stared down at the fallen soldier. She pressed her lips into a straight line and moved closer to the woman, eyeing her carefully. Was that...? Really? Huh; this day was getting better and better.

"You know, it's just a little dangerous for you Jericho-dwellers to be this far out here. This isn't your place, sweetheart, and there are plenty of trap out here to remind you of juuuuuust that fact," Esh smiled, her tone taking on a mocking quality. She lifted one hand towards the bear trap, letting her fingers dance slightly towards the steel digging in the skin of her enemy. "You know, like that one. Sort of a pain, inn'it?"

The rebel moved, grabbing up the fallen soldier's gun and holding it haphazardly. She sat down at the top of the incline, just out of arm's reach of the woman on the ground. "Were you thinking you needed a bit of help? Cause it sort of looks like, you know, your communicator is a bit out of sorts there." Esh was probably enjoying this whole damn thing too much. But there was business with this particularly military woman and it was damn good to see her tripped up here.

The pain was excruciating. Tess grimaced as her fingers snaked her way down to her damaged leg and tried to release the trap. The fall had broken her other wrist, and her other hand lacked the strength to do the job. She cursed and closed her eyes. Her chest heaved up and down, and she leaned her head back. The pain would subside as long as she didn’t move her leg.

Her eyes snapped open when she heard a familiar voice approaching. That rascal. Tess wasn’t looking to up her kill tally, but she had made it known that she would not hesitate to point and shoot if the Outsider threatened the city again. It had been awhile since she last saw the familiar face, and it even looked like she had grown some since Tess had last seen her. Maybe it was water under the bridge. Then she saw Eshne hand linger over the trap and knew by her teasing that she wasn’t here to help.

“Fuck you,”
Tess spat and lunged for her gun. The trap dug into her foot causing her to fall short of reaching her gun. She yelled out in annoyance when Eshne picked it up. Blinking back pained sweat, Tess watched as the young Outsider sat it back down. At least Tess had some comfort in knowing that Eshne wasn’t comfortable around weapons. Or maybe she thought Tess was defenseless.

At word of the communicator, Tess lifted the smashed device to her mouth, “TM-144. East wall, 4th sector. Requesting backup. Got a nasty Outsider brat here who thinks she’s gonna live another day.” Her words ended in a growl, but she mentally knew the device wasn’t working.

She covered her wrist with her other hand as if to shut off communications. She knew there wouldn't be hearing back from command anyway. “You better run,” Tess tried to keep her breathing steady as waves of pain spread through her legs, “You can thank me later.”
