the city of jericho
Jericho is a City.
The last city, to be exact. Oh, there are settlements here and there where a few people gather, usually around a supply of uncontaminated water, but outside the walls society has crumbled into anarchy. In the past, humans used and abused their mother earth, pouring toxins into her bloodstream and bleaching her of anything that might support life. Worse than polluting their home, they polluted themselves.
Careless breeding and a ridiculous notion that every human life is equally valid bypassed the process of natural selection, and after a few thousand years the human gene pool was a thick toxic sludge of undesirable DNA mess. As the planet slowly became less and less habitable, the humans' defenses continued to crumble, until nearly all of the world's population found it absolutely impossible to survive.
A group of privately employed scientists saw what was happening, and made a plan to ensure that the technology and society of civilized humanity was not lost. They created a small, self sustaining settlement on the shores of the Jericho river. Inside this settlement, they set to work correcting the damage done over the course of human history.
Three hundred years later, Jericho has blossomed. The founders have long since passed away, but the foundation they left for the next generation of Jerichans was immaculate. The city has grown upwards, with gleaming skyscrapers reaching towards the heavens. It is surrounded on all sides by huge hundred foot thick walls and fed by the same river that it drew its name from.
Within the city, the founders' work continues. Careful breeding programs and genetic engineering is utilized to strengthen the population against a world that is no longer habitable without modern technology. It is a strict life, but certainly better than living on the outside, where the expected lifespan is less than fifty years for a healthy person.
Jericho is a utopia, it is a safe haven. The citizens of Jericho are blessed.
We are blessed.
