||HOUSE OF LORDS MANDATORY PSYCHIATRIC ASSESSMENT
Subject: Maximus Horatio Harper
DOB: 4th of April 255J
Genetic Sequence: Superior- Class B sequencing.
THE SUBJECT HAS BEEN MADE AWARE THAT ALL ANSWERS ARE TO BE HOLO-RECORDED AND MAY BE USED AGAINST THE SUBJECT IN HIS APPLICATION TO BECOME A MEMBER OF THE HOUSE OF LORDS. THE SUBJECT HAS BEEN MADE AWARE THAT FAILURE IN ANY OF THE TESTING PERFORMED UNDER THE COURSE OF THIS MANDATORY PSYCHIATRIC ASSESSMENT MAY RESULT IN FURTHER ACTION BEING TAKEN AT THE REQUEST OF THE SENIOR INVESTIGATING PSYCHIATRIST; THIS ACTION INCLUDES BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO:
*) FURTHER PSYCHIATRIC TESTING.
*) INTERNSHIP IN A PSYCHIATRIC FACILITY.
*) FORCED MEDICATION AND THERAPY.
THE SUBJECT HAS WAVED HIS RIGHT TO HAVE A PSYCHIATRIST OF HIS OWN CHOOSING PRESENT AT THE TIME OF THIS INTERVIEW. THE INTERVIEW TODAY IS LED BY DR FRANK NEWALL PHD.
THE INTERVIEW IS AS FOLLOWS:
*Slight rustling can be heard on the audio file, muted conversation follows as Subject: Maximus Horatio Harper, enters into pict-recording and is seated. He looks off recording to Doctor Newall and nods his understanding to a question that has not been recorded due to the social nature of its inquiry (SIGNED AND PERMITTED BY DOCTOR FRANK NEWALL)*
Doctor Newall: The time is now 14:45. The interview of that follows is performed to the best of my ability, I,
Doctor Frank Newall do here by acknowledge that this interview is a mandated article for those who wish to gain employment within the House of Lords and as such would be performing an action tantamount to treason if I were to, through knowledge or failure, clear any individual who’s psychological and genetic profile would be unsuitable to such a requirement. Having acknowledged this I, Doctor Frank Newall, being on sound mind and a respected position within my field declare that the interview is legally binding for both me and the subject. The interview now begins.
Doctor Newall: Can you please state your full name for the recording?
Harper: Maximus Horatio Harper.
Doctor Newall: Thank you, very good. Now what follows is a mandated interview designed to judge your ability to perform within the station you are seeking. Failing this interview in any way that I judge can result in a full internship in a psychiatric facility until such a time as an approved physician such as myself deems your presence there no longer necessary. With this knowledge in mind, do you still wish to continue with your application?
Harper: *The Subject noticeably pauses here, a wry smile and a slightly sardonic expression are on the subjects face* Yes Doctor, in fact despite everyone’s best attempts to inspire me to do the exact opposite, I can honestly say that the more you people try to make me run away the more inspired I am to stick this thing out.
(Doctor Newall laughs from off recording)
Harper: Honestly though, would I be any better off answering no to any of the times I’ve been asked one form of that question or another? I mean honestly here Doctor, I’d be more concerned with the individuals who turn tail and run after finding out that you can pretty much turn them into a sedated husk legally if they’re found wanting than the ones whom willingly submit themselves to these tests. I’m here because I want to do something with my life, or rather, my Father really desperately wants me to do something with my life that he can be proud to rub in the faces of the people he plays squash and racket ball with.
Doctor Newall: Would you say that your Father is
forcing you to pursue this station?
Harper: Of course my father is forcing me! I’m sorry Doctor but I’m Class B raised, that means three code-damned things for absolute certainty. One) My Parents will be the pushiest things in my life until I get a wife and then they’ll become the third pushiest things in my life right after my wife and her parents, and Two) The only way to really distinguish myself, short of becoming an axe wielding serial killer or bestselling novelist is to go into politics and do something to change the system.
Doctor Newall: So you wish to elect changes to the way things are run?
Harper: Of course I do! Do you know what I majored in Doctor?
Doctor Newall: Yes, *The Doctor pauses to consult his charts and patient information* Genetics and code manipulation.
Harper: And do you know how governed that field is? How impossible it is to get to do anything? Make changes to anything? Going into that field, you kind of accept that you’re never going to be making any significant changes to our world in our life time, heck, maybe not even in the researchers who takes over where you leave off afterwards. We’re limited, our hands are tied by bureaucratic red tape, politicians who know nothing about the field are controlling the way that scientists, people like yourself and me, Doctor, can do their jobs. I want to change all that, I want to be the Lord responsible for giving the scientists the freedom to pursue things that have been kept from us for centuries.
Doctor Newall: Such as?
Harper: Immortality, invulnerability, I know I can’t hope to make any of the huge changes to these subjects. Those are so well bound in red tape by those in Class A that it would take an army of politicians working for a million years to get the samples needed to even begin working on those again. But what I can do with some certainty is begin to relax some of the controls and encourage scientists to begin looking at them in new ways. Innovation and inspiration Doctor, I have the means to inspire and now all I need is to find a means to allow myself and others to innovate.
Maximus smiled as he removed the earphones from his ears, cutting the audio-transcripts of his interview short. The wind howled around him as he looked out from his balcony over Jericho, it had been a good start of course, he’d played ball, gone through the correct channels, he’d shown face time with all the right individuals, put in countless hours of work and effort into making this work and now here he was on the cusp of success. He rubbed a hand over his face, gently as if afraid that rubbing too hard would disturb the reality around him and reveal all this to be a dream, one great false reality that would fly away and leave him to discover his journey not yet travelled. A days growth of hair rasped under his fingers and he absently thought about ringing for a shave but decided against it, not out of any abject laziness or disinclination but simply because he wanted to do it himself, he wanted to make this the first time he shaved as a Lord.
It was why he was up so early, listening to these tapes again instead of being with the woman who currently slept wrapped in his duvet. He wanted everything about his first day as a Lord to be memorable and for him that had to start with the growing light as he looked out to the west. Today was his first day as a Lord and in front of him, as the sun rose and made a painting out of the clouds and land beneath him, Maximus couldn’t help but feel it shone a little bit brighter than it ever had before, it was as if he were seeing the sun for the first time.
He'd unplugged the earphone before the Doctor could remind him about the small fact he'd said three things were certain for him, the words seemed to swim around him as he watched the sun rise ever higher.
'Oh the third thing Doctor? Well that's fairly obvious, I'm going to live a long, and, unless I make it otherwise, very boring life.'
He smiled at the words, he couldn't help it, it had been the only lie he'd told during the whole interview, the doctor couldn't have known that though, how could the doctor have known about the friends that Maximus had made?
And with that thought, and the sun rise chasing him, Maximus walked back into the bedroom returning to the woman and her husband who waited in sleep for him.
||A Few Things About Maximus:
1) Maximus is incredibly bright: No seriously, its true, Maximus has a fierce intellect. It is the driving force behind the man, everything that Max does, every action or inaction is focused and studied under that intellect. What expression he shows, what tie he wears, everything, is calculated, observed and measured to the Nth degree.
2) He adores Science: Literally anything to do with innovation, invention or discovery is like crack to Max. He'll lose himself quite willfully in reading a case study or some original research. It's not just the act of learning that Max loves but an almost sexual thrill as something previously unknown becomes known to him.
3) He wears many faces: Maximus is a very careful person, whom he is around certain people and how he handles himself can change entirely depending on his mood or his feelings for an individual. Maximus is a very closed person to those he doesn't know and even then becoming one of the few people he trusts absolutely takes some pretty herculean feats.
4) He has a terrible sense of time: Maximus must have over a dozen watches, alarm clocks and reminders set every day just to ensure he doesn't lose himself in a piece of research or "light" reading. It's not that Maximus is late as such more that he muddies the line of making it on time if he's left to his own devices and allowed to spend too long in his own little world.
5) He's a cunning linguist: Maximus has a knack given his intelligence for tripping people up in discussions or arguments. He see's straight into the heart of people's words and has a razor like tongue for when he wants to completely cutout the bull shit, unlike many politicians Maximus has no interest in playing the game and simply wants to serve his own goals, however and whatever they may be.
